A Home Group is like a small group in that it meets weekly for relationship development and encouragement towards spiritual growth, yet it does so by being built around the Seven Functions of Biblical Community (where a small group is usually built around a curriculum study).

A Home Group is also geared to involve the whole family (yes - children and teens too!) in the active 'living out' of the Seven Functions.  Groups are currently being formed from our two Community Groups.  Talk to your Community Group Shepherd if you are interested in participating with this new and exciting spiritual growth ministry, or just email us.

How do home groups fit into the five realms, and how do home groups connect with a community group?

Think of the five key life realms like this:

  • Our individual followers each answer to God Himself
  • Our families are made up of the individual followers sharing the same household
  • Our home groups are made up of families in a neighborhood (or nearby)
  • Our community groups are made up of the home groups in a geographical region
  • Our corporate worship is made up of all the community groups

So, it’s easy to see how the realms flow into and out of each other.  The home groups focus families with other families to specifically live out the seven functions of biblical community together.  These groups join other home groups in their area each Sunday morning in one of the various community groups to further strengthen relationships and impact in the Pueblo community.

What are the seven functions of biblical community?

The Seven Functions are the interactive key to successful home group life and involvement.  You could say they are the heart of the group. As several families meet weekly in a home group, they will, over the course of time, live out each of these seven functions - ministering to each other, their neighborhood, the church, the broader community, and beyond!

1) spiritual formation (intentional life transformation – through focusing on the 30 Core Competencies and other studies)

2) evangelism (reaching your neighborhood for Christ)

3) recreation (playing together)

4) volunteerism (serving together at Calvary)

5) international missions (sharing Christ beyond Pueblo)

6) care (meeting one-another's needs)

7) extending compassion (city-wide ministry)

How are Home Groups formed?

Home Groups are formed from several families within the same Community Group that live fairly close to each other.  One reality of living in a biblical community is that the closer a family is to other families (in a physical sense) the greater the likelihood will be that these families will truly share their lives in a spontaneous, frequent and consistent manner.

To become a part of a Home Group here at Calvary is simply a matter of talking to a Community Group Shepherd!  Look for one on a Sunday morning in the Community Group that focuses on the area of Pueblo you live in.  An alternative would be to email us directly, and we will get you connected!

What would a typical week look like?

On any given week, a group would focus on one or two of the seven functions. If the subject was International Missions, a group may spend time praying for their adopted missionary family in Siberia, and then write them letters as they plan a trip to visit them (Not Siberia in the winter though!) On a week focussing on Care, they may visit their adopted shut-in and clean out gutters and bringing cookies. Extending Compassion could entail volunteering at the soup kitchen. And Evangelism might be having a block party and inviting the neighborhood. Imagine a group of people that spend time living out their faith instead of just learning about it!
